Normally, I don't put much stock in Internet reviews. Particularly as a surgeon - I have seen too many medical professionals with reviews that simply don't correspond to what I know about them. Anyone who has had a bad meal in a restaurant with great Yelp reviews knows what I mean. When I need a recommendation, I go to people in the know. So when I was arrested for DWI for sitting in a parked car with the radio on in a town in Mecklenburg County, I asked my divorce attorney who to use. I asked the lawyer who represented me before the Medical Board who to use. And most importantly, I asked the premier DWI attorney in Forsyth County (who I had used previously for speeding tickets) who to use. Without hesitation, they all gave me the same name - Bill Powers. I will never forget what one of them told me - "Bill is the guy the judges use."

Mr. Powers and the rest of his staff lived up to their billing every step of the way. They were thorough, meticulous, and relentless. Emily Bretz, the associate in charge of revocations, swung into action immediately and got me my license back in 5 days. I originally left Chris a very poor review for multiple reasons. Mainly, the lack of communication after my judgement was delivered. I had to call repeatedly for multiple weeks to get documentation that I was promised. I got a call from him, directly, the day after I reviewed his firm. He asked what he could do to make it right with me. The only thing I wanted was the documentation that he promised me during his representation of me. Chris delivered later that day. Not only did he deliver on what he said he would do, he also went above and beyond and offered me an additional service for later, should I need it. For those reasons, I am changing my review from one star to four.

Chris McCartan laid my options out clearly and let me know what I was up against during his representation of me. I was confident in Chris to handle my case to the best of his ability. It took a lot of lifeguarding hours (this provided some time to contemplate on what she might have done differently) to pay the fines but the fines were for violations that would not doom her driving record.
We thought that her experiences had perhaps helped our son, who now at 18 still had a squeaky clean record. Though it probably helped out some, we realized that he was not without error when we received a very surprising notice recently in the mail that “his court date had been set”. After speaking with him, he informed us that as an 18 year old legal adult he had obtained his own lawyer (several months before this) and they had worked everything out and he was to be taking his classes that weekend to help erase the incident from his record. I will have to admit that I was very impressed, enough so that I didn’t even question his not telling us. They handled my case with ease

These guys are the Rolls Royce of DWI defense in the Charlotte area. Emily Bretz got me off for my DMV hearing (for refusal to take a breathalyzer)...which allowed me to keep my full license during this whole process. Then John Landreth got me a Not Guilty verdict at my criminal trial.

Yes, they are priced higher than many others but it was worth every penny for me. John Landreth in particular is not only competent, but he looked like he enjoyed every second of skewering the cop and the prosecutor at my criminal trial.

This is a brand name law firm as far I'm concerned, and it was certainly possible to get the same result for less--but with these guys you have an established history of success. Its really hard to predict how your lawyer will perform, but with these guys that extra couple of dollars up front buys you some peace of mind.

They deliver even when they are the underdog, because they are passionate about helping you...and honestly, these guys seemed just as pissed as I was about my arrest!

They may not guarantee a Not Guilty verdict, but they can guarantee that they'll give em hell in that courtroom.

One last thing...I would probably pay a significant amount of money to see that cop's face again, as he walked out of that courtroom feeling completely defeated. The not guilty verdict may cost you money, but the look on the cop's face when your lawyer completely owns him...PRICELESS.

Powers McCartan should be your first choice when it comes to legal representation. I had the opportunity to have Will Cathcart represent me as I was facing a DUI (.08), Reckless Driving, and a Speeding charge. Will left no stone unturned in arguing my DUI case and he had it dismissed. His knowledge of the law and the circumstance won the case...Matlock style! Will also worked with the DA to have the Reckless Driving dismissed and I only had to plea to the speed.
