Ms. Caraffa was amazing! I am very grateful for Legal Aid in assisting me. She gave me a call a couple of days after I applied and was very professional over the phone. When we met, she was sympathetic towards me and guided me on what to expect. She made me feel better every step of the way and I am forever grateful to her and Legal Aid for their wonderful services to the public.

Two ways to apply for legal aid. One way is to apply online, but their online application always displays this message: "Our online application is currently down for maintenance." Second option is to call a 866- number, no one picks up so you have to leave a message hoping that your call gets returned in time. In a day or two or three, someone will give you a call back from an unknown number, ask a few questions on your case, ask you to fax a few documents and say they will transfer your case to the local Legal Aid office and to expect a call from them by noon the next day, if not give them a call (another 866-number). The next day, I had not received a call and decided to call the local office and they told me that I would have to wait another 3 business days to find out if someone would take on my case. My court hearing was the next day. The only thing she could tell me to do was to try to extend my court date and to wait on their call to know if they would approve my application to represent me. My advice is to call them the minute you know of your court date. My court date was set 1 week from the day I found out and I waited until the next day to call. Good luck to anyone looking for a speedy process to lock in an attorney for your case. It is a free service but basically a week to find out if you will be represented or not is risky.

UPDATE: After I got the extension on my previous court date, they approved my application but decided that my case was not important enough to be represented by them.

I called to ask about legal aid. They were rude and the chick on the other end sounded aggravated. No help whatsoever.

I registered for one of their free clinics through Eventbrite. My confirmation email directed me to a location that was closed for maintenance. There was no contact information on the registration site or confirmation email. So I reached out to this and other LANC office locations to see if I could speak to a human for clarification and new direction. All office lines went directly to voice-mail.

I then called their "Help Line" which wasn't at all helpful. I sat and waited for the automated robot to provide me with an option to talk to a non-robot about a general issue such as this. Guess what? Of the 14 options offered to me on the phone, not one would be categorized as a line to call for general concerns. So I called back and just selected a random number to talk to someone; anyone. The "Help Line" then notifies me that average wait times are 15 minutes. 15 minutes?? I waited 20 and hung up.

Determined to attend, I went back to the registration site to look for other locations and then drove to the next nearest. I arrived an hour early and was welcomed by staff from the host location. After an hour and a half and no one else arriving, I asked the staff if they could contact someone to see if this event was even happening at all. After some investigating, the host staff notified that LANC, the registration site and confirmation email gave me the WRONG DATE!

A ridiculous waste of time.

I called Legal Aid after issues with a landlord. Did not have the opportunity to sit down with anyone. Talked to a lawyer by phone and was told that if I needed help before my court date to call again; however, a week later I got a package in the mail saying my case was closed. When I went to court I did what the layer had said and got scolded by the magistrate. I lost over $400. People need help with civil court as well as criminal but I did not feel that I mattered as much. I was broke, homeless, and needed help but felt like because I hate not committed a crime or charged with on, my need of help was less important.
