All I can say is WOW! I did not expect such stellar service from these people who I came to find out are WONDERFUL! In my occasional dealings with attorneys in the past, I have usually felt rushed or not important enough in their eyes to be fully heard, unless I paid thousands of dollars in retaining fees. Such was absolutely not the case with Tobener Ravenscroft, and specifically attorney, Tina Collins.

I contacted them because I was being harrassed by my apartment manager at a brand new apartment complex I just moved into 3 weeks ago in Oakland. They have been harassing me mercilessly because my two sons have been visiting me almost every day (not staying overnight) because they are essentially my caretakers. I have severe arthritis and I am dependent on them for many things to get through the day. Sometimes I'm fine but other times I'm quite disabled. The apartment managers watch the cameras like a hawk and every time they see my sons entering the building with the fob or by calling me on the intercom, they harass them and tell them they cannot use the key fob and and that they are coming here too often. They also call me day and night and tell me this over and over, and accuse them of staying the night..which is absolutely not true.

This seemed wrong to me in every way. Forced to be put on the lease for visiting their mother to help with activities of daily living she can't? Ridiculous! I can see this being an issue if they stayed the night frequently and stayed for hours on end, but they don't. They come over for a few hours, help with what I need, maybe return later to help with more things, and then leave. Some days they don't come over at all.
Anyway, I finally got fed up with the endless harassment and felt I needed some answers and possibly some leverage, as the management was beginning to insinuate they would evict me if my sons were not put on the lease.

I had my doubts that an attorney would help me without charging an expensive retaining fee, but this company's website seemed so friendly and I loved how they really seemed caring in the verbiage they used on their website, and also how adamant they were about how passionate their lawyers are in defending tenants' rights. So I called them, and from the first person who answered the phone to the attorney who called me back, the entire experience was like a welcoming oasis in a hot dry miserable desert.

Although not able to take my case at this point, Tobener Ravenscroft offered to give me 15 minutes of free advice and assistance over the phone. This sounded great, but I couldn't help but wonder if maybe there was a catch. But, after all was said and done, there was no catch!! My experience what I call the Dream team is because the impossible was pulled off. I was up against a slumlord that did everything possible to get away with being what he really is. An individual who doesnt abide by laws that we are supposed to abide by. Being a single parent in a very expensive county is no joke.

Having to practically work 3 jobs to survive practically not kidding almost killed me. I had a daughter I had to support and make sure she was educated. This man turned my world upside down literally, not wanting to fix anything but put a bandaid on it. Got sited and financially taking from me, along with not returning my deposit so I can move in a hurry.

I was in a landlord-initiated buyout situation where I had no experience. Jim Lucey ended up getting me more money than was initially offered, but there were times when I needed to remind him of details or some buyout conditions ended up being not quite what we had discussed. I found Joe Tobener by Googling "SF Tenant's Rights Attorney". All these news articles popped up quoting him. I called their office just to ask if I was getting a fair buyout on my apartment. They answered on the first ring(!), took some brief info and told me someone was going to get back to me later that day (!!!) -- FOR FREE (!!!)
The lawyer asked me smart questions for 45-minutes, said she was going to confer with the partners and get back to me. True to her word, she did; giving me options to pursue or not. I had to ask her what she would do before she'd give me an opinion. The topper: I asked what I owed them - $0.00.
