Ms. Gillespie, I sincerely think your intentions are good, but claiming to speak a language you do not, can hinder progress of the people you intend to help.
When my oldest daughter was one, she watched me play piano and guitar in the Spanish service at our church. I was always nervous to read even a short Bible verse aloud in Spanish. But I did it to help my friends start a congregation. They had shown me nothing but love. Our pastor and his wife were both from El Salvador. Their son was at my daughter's birthday. My daughter's best friend's parents were both born in Mexico. His sisters and brother were all at my daughter's birthday party. They saw my oldest daughter walk for the first time. Among other people at our church, they were our village. When my churchgoing in-law's at the time perpetrated the building of a wall on the southern US border, my response was clear, "The God I worship loves people on both sides of the border."
I hope that my daughters may one day have the opportunity to claim that they are fluent in Spanish or 'Se Habla Espanol' as your law firm falsely advertises. However, fluency takes dedication from a child's parents. In my house, both of my daughters say 'por favor' and 'gracias'. Hearing my two year old daughter say 'S'il vous plait' is the sweetest thing in the world. They know azul, rojo, and amarillo. My oldest can say 'Yo quiero agua' and 'Yo no se.' She also says 'Je ne sais quoi' with confidence and knows what it means. Because their Daddy loves to learn, my daughters actually know more songs in French than in Spanish. My Mom was always excited to teach me French Creole when she returned from working at medical clinics in Haiti. As a child, I watched movies in German with my Dad. At my house, my girls watch movies in Spanish and French.
Language development starts very early in life. My first exposure to Spanish was in the 3rd grade when my sister taught me the colors. Unfortunately, and despite my best efforts, I will never be fluent in Spanish. My girls heard 'uno, dos, tres' several times a day as infants. On my youngest daughters second birthday, my communication with her was limited to a few minutes. But we reviewed the words 'el Sol', 'la tortuga', and 'las flores' while FaceTiming. Nevertheless, as my interactions with my girls becomes increasingly limited, so too will be their ability to speak Spanish fluently and possibly help a burgeoning Hispanic community in North Carolina.
As part of medical mission teams to Peru, I learned about an extremely unique and diverse nation. I have never been so nervous than to speak Spanish in front of a congregation in the heart of the Andes. While Peru has more ecological zones than any country in the world, the people are even more diverse. Descendants of the Inca living above 10,000 feet and matrilocal families in Amazonia interact with the mestizo population of Lima. Among Quechua and the wide-variety of languages and dialects in the vicinity of Iquitos, Spanish is simply the language of commerce, not the only language.
It would have been medical Malpractice for any of the physicians on our trip to have claimed "Se Habla Espanol". When lives depend on the decisions of a professional, that professional should be certain that they have a concrete understanding of the language. A medical professional could easily misinterpret information by speaking directly with a patient. The classic example: The Patient, "Creo que estoy embrazado". La Medica, "She'll be fine, she is just embarrassed." O vice versa. A great translator, while incredibly valuable, could easily confuse Latin-based root words which are prevalent in medical and legal terminology.
Language has been a barrier and a gateway since the beginning of time. When professionals advertise that they speak a language, but do not, those professionals are causing more harm than good to their clients. False statements destroy trust and are contrary to the teachings del Salvador, Jesus Christo. En la Gloria de Dios and for my sweet baby girls.
