I consulted with Atty. Deborah Higgins on or about Monday, 18 June 2018, about some difficult probate issues that I was facing (and am a little slow in posting a review because I've had a lot of distractions and personal problems since then, not the least of which was a medical emergency that nearly cost me my life, and almost resulted in a face-to-face visit with my late father, the subject of my probate consult, here). Anyhow, while she's a personal injury attorney, she was quite knowledgeable. While she didn't give me legal advice, about my specific situation, or advise me exactly what to do (not having the full facts in front of her, and it just being a phone consult), Atty. Higgins, nonetheless, not only warned me of possible problems, but also steered me in the right direction to seek more detailed assistance about my probate problems. Chiefly, she spoke to me about my questions regarding whether a landlord could -- or couldn't -- legally seize personal property that was owed by someone who just died and left me some property, and also went over nuances like the family exemption and warned me regarding possible rent charges that the landlord might impose on me after my father passed. Most-importantly, however, is that she's an honest attorney, warning me against involved legal action: Even though she might've been able to convince me to go down that path, to pad her bank account, she, instead, chose to caution me that both myself and the other party might spend unnecessary additional fees to go to court (for both court costs and attorney fees). So, her respect, courtesy, honour, & integrity are sound. Besides that, both her communication skills, patience, and job skills are top-notch. I would recommend her for any of her areas of specialty, be it probate (which I discovered first-hand when I consulted with her about my father's estate and my role, rights, & responsibilities), student loans (where I'm an expert: Google me to see my research and columns on said issue), or personal injury (about which I know little). While I'm not a lawyer (and don't play one on T.V.—or my website), I did nearly win in court on behalf of Terri Schiavo (the famous “feeding tube” girl) – all by myself – doing better even than former Gov. So, while I'm not a lawyer, I do know a “legal thing or two,” and can speak with professional expertise in assessing Atty. I went to the Higgins law firm with the intent on learning about bankruptcy and possibly filing in the near future. Ms. Higgins was very informative and detailed with regards to the structure of the different types of BK, requirements for each type and the processes. I am also going through a family law issue Ms. Higgins was able to describe in detail the options I have and the issues that may come up if I file before or after divorce.

Ms. Higgins informed me that no matter the dispute the IRS “taxes” have to be paid first! I believe this simple advice saved me from jail time.

I recently had a hearing where I was being held in contempt for nonpayment of an unreasonable amount of attorney’s fees. When I was asked to account for a sum of money that was in my checking that had already been allocated to my 2017 taxes. I answer simply “I had to pay my taxes” the judge was very unhappy and threatened to throw me in jail. Long story short at the end of the hearing I didn’t have to pay tens of thousands of dollars in attorney’s fees instead I walked away only having to turn over a couple of thousand dollars and the title to my second 12-year-old beat up vehicle and no jail time.

I went to see deborah higgins about a home forclosure in nj. She told me that she is only licenced in fl. As we continued to talk she told us (wife and i) that we could turn ownership of the house to creditor and that would save my credit. She would draft the letter. She told us she gets 300 per hr and that thecost would be 1,000.00. She told us we could communicate by e-mail as her phone was not set-up. I know this to be true as i had tried to call several times and could not even leave a message. After not hearing anything in 2/2.5 weeks i e-mailed her and was told that we needed to file a motion to dismiss and she needed more money. I told her i didint understand. After going back and forth she could not handle my case any longer as she had countless hours on my case even stating that i would already still owe her 2,000 that she knows she would never get!! She even had the nerve to tell me that she told me from the start that she can not get involved in a legal issue in nj. SHE TOOK MY MONEY EVEN KNOWING THAT SHE HAD NO LEGAL STATUS IN NJ AND COULD NOT GET INVOLVED IN A NJ CASE
im still in the same boat but 1,000.00 poorer !!! I go to a lawer for help and get ripped off ! Stay clear of higgins law !!!!!! As a lawyer shouldn't you keep somewhat of a professional apperance? Her office and her attire looked terrible. Soon as i walked in the door i was like Oh No
