MONTGOMERY -- The talk in the State House since Wednesday has been the "fight" between two legislators over one of their wives. Rep. Steve Hurst, D-Munford, said he punched Rep. Patrick Jones, D-Huntsville, because Jones allegedly put his hand on his wife's leg at a popular legislative hangout in Montgomery last Tuesday night after being warned to leave her alone. Hurst said Jones had been making inappropriate comments to his wife since last year. Hurst said Jones allegedly gave Linda Hurst a hug and made an inappropriate remark during karoake night at the Ramada Statehouse Inn near the State House where the Legislature meets. He said Jones followed them to their table and allegedly grabbed her leg. That's when Hurst said he backhanded him with an ashtray and then hit him again. Jones, who is married with a child, told the Huntsville Times, Anniston Star and Birmingham News that he did nothing inappropriate and had only pointed to Mrs. Hurst's leg and said that her slip was showing. Jones demanded an apology from Hurst and threatened legal action. Jones had a chipped tooth and a cut on his face. House members have been approaching Hurst offering their congratulations and saying thank you for his action. Both men are middle-aged.
