Going to court is never easy. Going to court for a child custody case is difficult for all parties involved. Fortunately, I selected John Negley to be my attorney and that was the best decision I could have made. I have had sole legal and physical custody of my daughter since she’s been 3 months old. She is now nearly 8 years old and several times I have been taken back to court by her mother for modification to the order. Each time John has been extremely prepared and each time no change to the order has taken place. Many have commented in their reviews of how prepared John is, how he listens to his clients concerns and especially how he performs in the courtroom. All of this is true, I have personally witnessed this firsthand and most recently 2 weeks ago at my daughter’s trial where at the end the judge was to give his decision as to the parenting plan. Faced with some pretty high stakes concerning legal custody I was in search for a good lawyer that can represent me during a evidentiary hearing. I searched as far as Los Angeles in order to find representation to defend my position. After asking friends,family and associates for a referral I ran into a friend that is familiar with the local court system. She gave me a couple names but really spoke highly of John Negly. After reading all the reviews on yelp and meeting with him I decided to go with John. I was up against the wall and prior to retaining John things were not going my way so we had an uphill battle to fight. Without going into a lot of details all I will say is that the mediators recommendation was not in favor of me. If you are familiar with the family court system the judge will take the mediators recommendation almost always. Knowing this John decided to take on our case. John was very truthful and let me know that to overturn a mediators recommendation is a tough task but after explaining all the facts he said I had a case and he would do his best to bring to light all the facts for the judge to see. After meeting with John several times and giving him all the information he was able to put together a really strong case for us. When the day came for the hearing I was blown away by John’s preparation and his performance inside of the court room. The way he cross examined, presented facts and was able to control the room was impressive. Our opposition brought this particular motion so naturally we would been on the defense but the way John presented the case opposing console was on their heels and it appeared that they were the ones on the defensive not us. John was able to present my case in a way in which the judge was able to see the truth. In the end the Judge did not go with the mediators recommendation and I was able to maintain legal custody of my son. I highly recommend John and his firm, John took the time to understand the complexity of my situation and did an outstanding job through and through.

My story is pretty complicated so i will just explain the short version!.
I have a current divorce based in Ventura and had just recently moved to NV. I wasn't able to make my hearing due to medical reasons. I called at least 10 different law firms and was told " In order to show up and ask for a continuance" I needed to retain the law firm and come up with thousands of dollars to even get started with them.. "what?? just to have someone show up and continue my case??? I finally came across Negley in my search and called expecting the same response as all the firms i had called that day, instead they listened to my situation and immediately allowed me to work with them and have them show up on my behalf and continue my case.. I not only saved money, but after showing up on my behalf were able to continue my case and start a dialog with my ex's side and almost come to a resolution to my whole case before court even started!!!

I first came to John Negley's office in a desperate situation and in great need of help. His staff got me an appt the next day and John sat down with my husband and I late in his day and took a great deal of time listening and answering all of my questions. He was extremely knowledgeable and was very upfront and honest about the process and what we were facing. Absolute Incompetence. Buyer beware. Unfortunately, a review such as this is oft the only recourse consumers have. The level of sheer incompetence encountered w/ Mr. Negley and his firm is difficult to encapsulate in a limited review. The firm was slow to supply documents, often incomplete at that. Mr. Negley himself was late to our court hearing, even further he had forgot to bring all the required paperwork. Minutes in to our side-bar counseling about our case he left us to deal, apparently, with more pressing cases. He did this repeatedly throughout the day. His absolute lack of professionalism almost left me speechless. He was haphazard in his questioning of the opposition - reminiscent of someone who learned law from a reality TV show. The only outcome he succeeded in was annoying the judge, us, and earning us the absolute worst outcome we could have expected. The opposition didn't even have counsel. Mr. Negley was literally bested by a layperson. He failed to listen to anything we tried educating him on about our case. His ego and incompetence prevented anything of value being extracted by procurement of his services and firm. And to add insult to injury, we had to pay him for it. EVERY SINGLE line item charged to us, whether it be a photo copy made or otherwise was charged at the absolute highest rate. You, the consumer of such services, have been warned. At one point, we literally thought Mr. Negley was in cahoots with the opposing party - that is how detrimental his services were. We can't change the past, but we can learn from our grievous mistakes. And our mistake was the Negley law firm.

I selected John to represent me after vetting 3 other highly recommended divorce attorneys in the Ventura County area.
The issues at stake were reducing/eliminating a long term (24 years) spousal payment and managing what would be a highly contentious, emotional, and, most certainly court required appearances.
John's approach is one of candor, direct discussion of realities vs hopeful outcomes and a serious weighing of strengths and weaknesses of the case I brought to him. He will never overpromise or mislead you to get your business. He very clearly (and many times) let me know that nothing in the courthouse is guaranteed or even, at times, predictable.
John laid out a strategy for my case that covered all the background, detail and communication from the original court order on the spousal award. He meticulously prepared our position, supported by family case law, and held fast against opposing counsel's letters and phone calls.

John's experience and knowledge of family law enabled us to negotiate a settlement that I wholly supported---and we did not end up in court, in front of a judge, where the unknown was far greater a risk for me than the negotiated settlement.

Finally, from a cost/billing perspective I found John to be reasonable in the hours and costs billed. He did not bill for every incidental letter review or document approval. On the monthly billings I would often find activities completed with 'no charge noted on the invoice. A very different experience from other attorney's I have engaged.

I was involved in a divorce that took 30 months before an agreement was finally reached. 2 Lawyers and 70K later I was still waiting on the money that was agreed to in the MSC. I had a difficult custody case, my first lawyer nickeled and dimed me and didn't do much for us. A very well known private mediator who worked for years in the self help room referred me to John Negley. That was the best thing I ever did! John did for me and my young son what everyone in the court system was impossible. He really cared about my case and fought hard for me. I have even called him since my case has been over and he still advises me to this day ! He hardly paid any interest in the actual case and literally it was a high confilct case and when push came to shove....Negley was neglective and I was not satisfied with the services whatsoever. A bunch of hooplah was made for me to fill out forms that never got filed because they wanted more money. I could have done the whole thing myself and saved on the retainer. I just had to succumb to their requests and the only person that truly loses in this case were the children to never be reunited with their birth mom because the father was abusive, controlling and rather believe a tyrant teenage child rather than logic and reality. This attorney is not recommended for those who do not have deep pockets and for anyone who wants someone to really fight for you.
