If you want a lawyer who will advise you and fight for you, DO NOT hire Stephanie Gurolla. My husband and I hired Ms. Gurolla for a simple case that should have taken 6 months, 8 months max. It took nearly 18 months. 18!
So, from the top...
Due to its simplicity, Ms. Gurolla agreed to take on our case for a flat fee. (It was still several grand, so the cost was nothing to sneeze at.) Once hired, it took 8 months to make any headway and go to mediation. During mediation, Ms. Gurolla offered no counsel and sat on her phone for almost the entire 3 hours! She also kept complaining that we shouldn’t even have had to go to mediation...as if we were wasting her time. (The mediator also turned out to be a lawyer buddy of hers who conveniently raised his hourly fee mere days before our mediation appointment.) No agreement had been met during mediation, so Ms. Gurolla said she would be in contact to further pursue our options.
Radio silence from her end for weeks. I, being ignorant to how these sort of legal processes work, allowed 2ish months to pass before finally reaching out. Ms. Gurolla claimed that we hired her only through mediation and her obligation was fulfilled. I was under the impression that she would represent my husband and I through final judgement. Upon re-reading the contract, I discovered tricky wording that somewhat backed her claims...but it also somewhat backed my claims too. (Be wary of these contracts as they can be interpreted in various ways.) Ms. Gurolla agreed to continue to represent us for an additional $1k+. Not being able to afford the retainer for a new lawyer, we reluctantly and halfheartedly agreed. I mean, the case wasn’t that difficult so we had some hope.
More months pass, we FINALLY get a court date. A day before court, we get an offer from the other party to settle. We were never advised that this was even an option. We ended up settling, with no help from Ms. Gurolla. Hiring her was utterly pointless. The settlement was not what we were hoping for. We were just so tired of how long this whole case took and wanted to be done.
Throughout the 18 months...each time we contacted Ms. Gurolla, we were met with masked contempt. It felt like we were annoying her. We became anxious anytime we had to deal with her. (We ended up primarily dealing with her assistant, Joanne...who was fantastic.) We felt duped because Ms. Gurolla had seemed so kind and competent at our consult. Had we known that once she got her money she would leave us hanging, we wouldn’t have hired her. My husband and I were extremely disappointed with her services.
Ms. Gurolla, if you happen to read this...there’s no point trying to reach out and “fix” this now that you received a poor review. You had many opportunities to make things right.
ETA: I forgot to mention, after we signed the settlement paperwork...we never heard back from Ms. Gurolla. We were never given a copy of the final judgement and she failed to submit the documentation to DCF (after she said she would). Weeks went by and nothing had been updated in their system. We had to meet with DCF multiple times to take care of it ourselves.
