I had used Elizabeth for my divorce case and everything seemed to have gone well. When my husband and I decided it would be best for my two older daughters to be adopted by my husband I called this firm again and hired Elizabeth. Throughout the whole process it was a hardship. Elizabeth had quoted that this would be $3,000 or $5,000 if my daughters biological father contested. When we went to trial she was so unprepared and came to trial dressed so unprofessional. We could hardly ever get a hold of her she hardly put any effort into our case and did horrible in trial. Even other attorneys noticed. She doesn’t seem to really have much knowledge in this area so I am very surprised at a review I read here that had mentioned she did. We ended up paying a total of 12,000 dollars for the whole thing. Attorneys that have more knowledge and are so much better had mentioned how they were even sick to their stomach when they heard of this. I would always get my bills on time or emails when I wouldn’t pay them so I could actually reach her. She completely took advantage of my family and I for the little effort she made on our case and how she performed. What she charged us was honestly a rip off and the firm truly does not seem to have their clients best interest. The only reason we even won the trial was truly thanks to my daughters public attorney who showed a genuine interest in helping my girls. Her closing argument was amazing and she did so well in court. The way Elizabeth was so unprepared, unorganized and unprofessional was honestly embarrassing. I am only writing this review because I really hope to help someone avoid what my family and I went through. We invested everything on this case for our daughters and all this firm truly seemed to care about is what and how much possible they can take from you. They never tried to justify there wrong in taking only what they deserved and I am honestly disappointed with how the whole process was handled. I hope you all find this helpful and please consider carefully and do your research elsewhere before trying to hire this attorney for a case. I echo a lot of what I am seeing on yelp here as far as the negative reviews. I used this firm years ago and there was incompetence, disorganization and just plain shadiness. Two of their attorneys literally, one a partner, showed up in court in wrinkled and tattered clothing. I felt like I handed my case over to the opposing party on a gift platter and still had to pay a ridiculous bill! Take your business elsewhere. They are in it for the money not to really help, and embarrassed me in court being unprepared and disheveled. Their documents were criticized by the judge for inaccuracy on legal protocol and typos. Also, the billing is exorbitant. You are paying for an AV rated attorney and getting country bumpkins. The only time they seem effective is in charging you more for than what you could ever get. If you want to avoid looking like a fool and actually win your case-find another firm.

From the beginning of my consultation up to my final divorce proceedings and anything asked after has been nothing short of professional and courteous. Elizabeth was very helpful and knowledgeable about adoption cases. I was looking into adopting my step kids and am familiar with the firm since my wife used Craig to help her with her divorce. I was not sure of the steps or process of adoption and Elizabeth was able to answer everything for me. Gave me a free consultation which if I remember ran about a hour long. She never once rushed me and made sure if we chose to move forward that it would not be a waist of my money if there was no grounds to move forward on. Stay as far away from this law firm as possible. BEWARE! If this system allowed me to give no stars I would. They prey on people in a desperate situation and double charge you. I was married for 2 years. They charged me over $15,000 plus and never resolved my marriage. Elizabeth told me at the most with such a short time of being married and no real assets it would not be more than $5,000. I ended up having to fire her for not having my best interest at hand and had to settle the divorce on my own at a much better resolution than what she was trying to get me to settle for. The opposing attorney had to threaten to file sanctions against her because of her inability to perform her job. Then the senior attorneys don't care about you when you try to explain your disappointment in wanting to resolve this. I will be filing a complaint with the Bar Association and letting anyone and everyone know what happened to me in hopes that they do not find other victims to steal from. If anything I hope others will read this and find an honest law firm that will actually work with your best interest at hand and treat you like an attorney is suppose to treat you and be an advocate on behalf of their client.

Incredibly disappointed with this law firm. At first, I felt good about this firm but it didn’t take long to feel like they were taking advantage of me. I soon realized the 5-6000 they initially said it would cost wasn’t even close. I ended up having to go through arbitration with them. It’s not an easy thing to do. It’s incredibly stressful. It was hard for me to come up with the money for arbitration.
You have to pay for arbitration too. It seems like it’s the only way to attempt to be treated fairly by this firm. My bill was lowered by over 7000. I still feel ripped off. That 7000 was just from bogus fees and charges.
The problem with arbitration is you have to prove that your attorney didn’t actually make a 4hr phone call. That’s not easy to do, even though a 4hr phone call seems ridiculous. I can’t even go 4hrs without a bathroom break. Since there was over 7000 of fees and charges that I didn’t owe, I have a hard time feeling good about the hours I was billed.
To me it doesn’t seem like a very ethical way to run a business. Over charging your clients and then forcing them to fight back against you to attempt to make things even a little closer to fair. I suppose there are people that just pay rather than deal with the stress and that encourages this behavior.
It also felt like my attorney was really upset that I wasn’t just paying him all the money the firm said I owed, even though I clearly didn’t owe what the firm claimed. I'm a veteran and don’t have much money and I certainly can’t afford to hand over a bunch of extra money that someone didn’t earn. The way he was asking about how long I served made me feel like he thought I was getting a bunch of money from a military pension and the VA. I’m not.
I don’t think a firm should be able to completely over charge and the only consequence they face is getting paid what they claim to be owed for billed hours. But then I guess that’s the reason they do it.
In my opinion, you shouldn’t do business with this firm. Especially if you are in the military or a veteran.
I’m sure Mikey will respond below about how difficult it is to deal with anonymous reviewers or how he hasn’t had a client with this name. I wonder if it’s because these situations are so common at this firm that he honestly doesn’t know who is doing the reviewing.

Do not waste your money on these attorneys. Van Thiel will rip you off. He will talk a big game when you consult with him then the day of court comes and he does nothing to fight for you. Michael Fischer is a weak and passionless attorney. He was hired to help me in a custody battle with my bully ex husband. He failed to properly study my case for our only court date, which resulted in a judgment based on bad facts and wrong numbers. He was weak in court and did not stand up for me at all. When I tried to do the talking for myself to the judge, he shushed me! I am in a worse monthly financial situation then I was when I hired him to represent me and go to court. My ex has been emboldened to bully me further because he knows my attorney was weak and I paid out over $5,000 to this man! He is dishonest about the charges he tried to bill me for, charging $138 for a phone call with me that never took place! Weak and not to be trusted! I have already steered 3 women away from working with him because I don't want to see them get screwed over by Fischer or their ex's.

The Fischer & Van Thiel Firm is a great firm. They're very dependable, knowledgeable, and experienced. I definitely recommend them.

Elizabeth Van Thiel did absolutely nothing for me during my case which is still open 2.5 years later. I paid my retainer and got the "Military Discount" for the hourly rate, which was gone before two hearings. At which point she did absolutely nothing to stop my soon to be ex from running all over me and taking to the bank for 3k a month. Worst experience of my life with this firm. They are quick to send letters that you owe money but when it comes time to actually do their job and fight for their client they wont move a muscle.

I wish there was an option for no stars. This is the worst law firm I have ever dealt with. I paid them the full amount we agreed upon and they kept sending me emails with payments I needed to pay. They did this for about 3 months straight. What's the worst is that they didn't help me out in any way whatsoever and continued to beg for money that was already paid off. Do not go through this law firm or else you will pay money for no reason at all.

It was nice to have everything taken care of for me and have some things explained that I didn't quite understand. My declaration had to be rewritten several times because the paralegal and attorney on my case kept leaving things out of it that I wanted in. Also, had to be revised for simple spelling and name errors. This is the part where I really feel I got hosed on the fees, but it is what it is. As of right now, I haven't been able to pay my bill and was supposed to do so by the end of the month. Emergencies came up and the funds I had allocated needed to go elsewhere. I'm hoping I can reach some kind of agreement with them to keep my already meager paychecks from being garnished.
